There are many opinions on the origin of the Dogue De Bordeaux (French Mastiff). This breed may have originated from the Greek, from mastiffs taken to Europe, or from the Spanish dogs of Burgos. The Dogue de Bordeaux was originally intended for dog fighting and hunting. In the past, the Dogue De Bordeaux was used as a war dog, a guardian of flocks, a cattle driver and personal bodyguard. Many French Mastiffs were killed during the French Revolution trying to defend their masters' estates. Raymond Triquet's French Dogue de Bordeaux Club helped to save and maintain the breed. The Dogue de Bordeaux is recognized in France and has quickly gained popularity in other countries. 3000 Dogue De Bordeaux Puppies currently populate the United States.
The French Mastiff has been more domesticated over the years and now has a good and calm temperament. The French Mastiff is quite patient, loyal and dedicated to his family. He also serves as a excellent watchdog as he is quite intimidating to strangers. Despite his giant size and intimidating appearance, the Dogue de Bordeaux is a gentle giant especially with young children. They make excellent family pets.
You may remember the French Mastiff featured in the 1989 Tom Hanks' movie "Turner and Hooch"
