The American Cocker Spaniel, was originally developed from English Cocker Spaniels in the United States. The American Cocker Spaniel is smaller and slightly different than its English cousin. The name "Cocker" comes from the woodcock, a game bird that spaniels helped hunt. Now the Cocker Spaniel serves primarily as a companion but still it can be used for hunting, tracking and retrieving. It also makes a good watchdog.
This is a beautiful spaniel with very long ears, a round head, and a silky, medium-length coat. The upper lips hang down and completely cover the lower jaw. TheA nose is always black on black dogs, but could be brown on other dogs. The eyes are round and look forward. The body is compact, with a short back. Cockers come in buff, black, and other solid colors, black-and-tan (like the colors of a Rottweiler or Doberman Pinscher), parti-colors (white with black, white with buff or red, white with black and tan). The tail is docked.
American Cocker Spaniels are equally suited to life as a hunting dog or as a household pet. Cheerful, sweet, and sensitive, a Cocker Spaniel makes a great children's pet, and minds its adult master's authority without much challenge; happy, adorable, gentle and trusting, with average intelligence. They are lively, playful and devoted, but must be trained well when they are young to avoid a tendency for shyness. Cockers love everyone but need people to be happy. They are easy to train and get along well with other animals.
Cockers do fine in an apartment if they have adequate exercise, and are quite active indoors. They need only a small yard. Cockers have a lot of stamina and love regular exercise.
Your Cocker Spaniel will need regular grooming and trimming. IKC has the best grooming service around. Some owners leave the coat long, brushing daily and shampooing frequently with quarterly clipping. Others prefer to clip the coat to medium length to be more functional. When brushing, be careful not to pull out the silky hair. This breed is an average shedder.
